Kalahari:
|
We
looked down onto the deep heart of the desert and the
empty bed of a broad, winding watercourse ... a remote
world sealed with red sand, and spread out as still
as the waters of a locked ocean.
Sir Laurens van der Post, The Lost World of the Kalahari
|
The
Kalahari Desert is a vast and almost unpopulated area, stretching
from the northern region of South Africas Northern Cape
Province into central Botswana. It is not a true desert in the
very strictest sense of the word, but the southern Kalaharis
classic dune landscapes and broad riverbeds, lined with gnarled
acacia trees, will appeal to anyone with even the remotest weakness
for romantic landscapes. Inhabitants of the Kalahari Gemsbok
National Park (the South African portion of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier
Park, a vast conservation area straddling two countries) include
big game such as Lion, Cheetah and Gemsbok, a notable diversity
of raptors, and also a colourful selection of dry woodland birds.
