Organising a Pelagic Trip:

Reasonably priced day trips, led by experienced local leaders, depart from Simon’s Town harbour about once a month (more often in winter). It is also possible to charter more speedy and luxurious private game-fishing vessels departing from Hout Bay. Please contact the authors (see Useful Contacts, p.136) for up-to-date pelagic birding trip information.

Pelagic birding vessels use radar to detect and approach trawlers on the continental shelf, 30–40 km offshore. Ensure that you arrive early and get good directions to exactly where to park in the harbour. Conditions may turn fairly rough, especially during winter, so be sure to bring anti-nausea tablets if you are prone to seasickness. If you do feel sick, try to stay outside in the fresh breeze, and keep your eyes on the horizon. If you can, stay near the middle of the boat where there is a little less motion, and try to avoid the diesel fumes, which only exacerbate one’s malaise. Conditions on board can vary substantially from quite hot to exceptionally cold, particularly on rough days when sheets of spray may soak one at intervals. Essential items include a waterproof anorak, a jersey, some spare clothing, and a woolly cap or hat which won’t get blown off. Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential for the glare (don’t underestimate the sun offshore – you will get quite burnt even when the air is icy). It is of course worth bringing a camera, but be sure to protect it from the salt water.
