Nocturnal
Mammals of the Karoo:
Night-drives in the Karoo can be every bit
as exciting as those in the renowned game reserves of the savanna
regions. There may be no lions, but for many the experience
of seeing such unique and bizarre mammals as Aardvark (Orycter-opus
afer, below), Caracal (Felis caracal), Porcupine (Hytrix africaeaustralis)
and Aardwolf (Proteles cristata) will be even more memorable.
More common predators are Bat-eared Fox (Otocyon megalotis),
African Wild Cat (Felis sylvestris), Cape Fox (Vulpes chama)
and Black-backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas). You may be lucky
enough to see one of these species foraging at dawn or dusk.
