Nest
of Deception:
The
near-endemic Cape Penduline Tit is perhaps most famous
for its nest, a deceptive structure equipped with a conspicuous
predator-deterring false entrance (here seen directly opposite
the belly of the bird). This leads to an empty chamber. To
enter the concealed main compartment, the bird parts a hidden
slit (with its foot, shown here opposite the bill of the bird)
and slips in. The soft yet tough nest is made from fluffy
wind-blown seed coverings or sheep's wool.
