Garies
to the Groen River Mouth:
Some
of the most conspicuous examples of heuweltjies
(see p.104) are found just 4 km north of the town of Garies,
on the hillsides to the east of the N7. The unsurfaced road
that links Garies with the mouth of the Groen River (signposted
Groenriviermond) is worth travelling in the winter
months in search of Ludwigs
Bustard (p.105*). Other birds to look out for include
Southern
Black Korhaan (p.57*), Karoo Lark, Southern
Grey Tit, Mountain Chat, Chat Flycatcher
and Bokmakierie. Acacia Pied Barbet and Pririt
Batis (p.85*) occur in the scattered patches of trees.
The Groen River estuary itself offers good waterbirds, including
Greater Flamingo, South African Shelduck and
Cape Teal. African
Black Oystercatcher (p.32*) occurs along the coast,
Cape Long-billed Lark (see page on changing
bird taxonomy) is common in the coastal scrublands, and
Heavisides Dolphin (see
box below) can often be seen just offshore.
