Skilpad,
Kamieskroon:
The
Skilpad section of the newly proclaimed Namaqua National Park
is one of the most popular flower-viewing localities in Namaqua-land.
Because most of the land is rather degraded (which enhances
the displays of annual plants), birding in the reserve is
poor, and it is not worth visiting out of season. However,
the rocky slopes along the 21-km drive to Skilpad contain
Cinnamon-breasted
Warbler (p.85*), Fairy Flycatcher and Layards
Titbabbler. Pririt
Batis (p.85*) occurs in the acacia-lined watercourses
at the N7 road bridge near Kamieskroon and, in Skilpad itself,
below the reserve offices. Keep an eye open for Southern
Black Korhaan (p.57*), Clapper
Lark (p.116*) and Black-headed
Canary (p.105*) along the 5-km circular drive through
the open plains of the reserve. To reach Skilpad, follow the
signs from Kamieskroon, or enquire at the hotel.
