The
Damara Tern Colony:
De
Mond is the site of one of only two Western Cape breeding colonies
of this declining species (currently, only a handful of pairs
breed). The colony is 9 km west of the estuary and is best reached
by road. From the reserve gate, retrace your route for 11 km,
turn left at the crossroads and continue until you join the
tarred R319 to Struisbaai. About 5 km before Struisbaai, take
an inconspicuous turn-off to the left, signposted Struisbaai
Plaat. A gravel track runs through dune thicket (where
Southern Tchagra occurs) and forks twice. At the first fork,
turn right; at the second, turn left. Park in the small parking
area at the beachs edge, and walk to your left (northwards).
The colony is usually within 100 m of the parking spot, on the
flat, shell-covered dune slacks where the dunes meet the beach.
Please keep your distance, so as not to disturb the breeding
birds.
