Lemming Cycles at Langebaan Lagoon:

Professor Les Underhill of the Avian Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town is running long-term waterbird counts at the lagoon, and has demonstrated that the number of Curlew Sandpipers wintering here is affected by the Arctic Lemming cycles. When the Lemming numbers in Siberia crash every three years, Arctic Foxes turn to preying on the sandpipers instead.
